Visionary Founder, Eternal Oasis Gurugram
& Garden of Spiritual Wisdom
Umesh Mathur, Founder and Director of Eternal Oasis—a Gurugram-based center for arts, culture, and spirituality—has dedicated his life to bridging media, education, and inner transformation. A pioneering television anchor at Doordarshan from 1975, he hosted discussion and entertainment programs during India's single-channel TV era. Simultaneously, as a journalist with Hindustan Times, The Indian Express, and UNI, he delivered lead stories shaping public discourse.
Today, Mathur leads operations in educational technology and socially impactful projects. He conceived Eternal Oasis as a spiritual hub fostering inner growth and showcasing India's cultural heritage for global audiences. In Sarnath, Varanasi, he created the concept and creatives of the Garden of Spiritual Wisdom, blending sculptures and exhibits to distill Indian wisdom traditions—a must-visit for cultural enthusiasts, international tourists and Buddhist pilgrims. He develops YouTube videos and manuscripts on spiritual education, alongside seven Kindle books including An Overview of Buddhist Teachings, Mindful Breathing for Better Immunity, and Empowerment Through Vedantic Teachings.
A prolific filmmaker, Mathur pioneered India's Teleteach project, producing over 2,500 educational films via studios in Delhi and Mumbai. His 120+ films and documentaries—such as The Pahargarh Rock Paintings, Chipko Andolan, and series on Goa's heritage—earned nationwide acclaim. He served on national committees for Health, Environment, Rural Development, Science & Technology, and Adult Education.
Mathur's global footprint shines in Indo-Japan relations: founder of the Indo Japan Software Research Committee, publisher of Indo Japan Commerce, and organizer of expositions like World PC Expo. He addressed the UN twice for NGO accreditation and also scripted the first UN lecture on spirituality for the 2006 World Youth Peace Summit. He was responsible for the NGO accreditation of the UN Day of Vesak organization (Day of Buddha) via his address before the 120 nations accreditation committee.
Honors include the 2017 Inspire Spiritual & Wellness Visionary Award for the Sarnath Garden, 2016 Certificate of Excellence for mind-body-spirit authorship, and consecutive Tripadvisor accolades. From TV panels with Amitabh Bachchan and Shyam Benegal to fostering software exports, Mathur's legacy inspires inner transformation through spiritual knowledge.
Lifelong Learning & Holistic Education
My contribution to the objectives of the National Education Policy is centred on making knowledge, learning and India’s wisdom traditions more accessible, relevant and experiential for people across generations. This contribution takes several forms. It includes the creation of visible and accessible video-based educational resources, the development of an open-air educational museum in Sarnath at the Garden of Spiritual Wisdom, and the creation of infrastructure and spaces at Eternal Oasis, Gurugram, designed to facilitate learning, reflection, cultural engagement, spiritual exploration and wellbeing. Through Eternal Oasis, he has contributed to the conceptualisation and facilitation of spiritual, healing, cultural and programmes and events. These initiatives create opportunities for people to engage with knowledge not merely through conventional classroom formats, but through dialogue, experience, contemplation, art, culture, meditation and community participation.
Another important aspect of this work is the development of books, educational material and courses for Indian and global audiences. These resources seek to disseminate knowledge drawn from India’s rich intellectual and wisdom traditions and translate it into forms that can be understood and applied in contemporary life.
The broader objective is to make this knowledge useful for people of different ages and backgrounds — from the young to the elderly — by helping them develop practical perspectives and life skills that can be adapted to their own circumstances. Rather than presenting wisdom as abstract philosophical knowledge, the approach is to help individuals understand how these principles can be applied to everyday challenges, relationships, emotional difficulties, uncertainty, ageing, personal growth and the pressures of modern life.
In this way, the work contributes to the larger vision of lifelong learning and holistic education: education that extends beyond academic qualifications and supports the development of resilience, self-awareness, compassion, ethical understanding, critical reflection and the ability to navigate life's challenges with greater clarity and equanimity.
The underlying knowledge is rooted in Indian wisdom traditions, while its application is contemporary and universal. By combining traditional knowledge with modern formats such as videos, courses, books, experiential programmes, museums and public events, the aim is to create educational resources that can reach a wider national and global audience.
Ultimately, the vision is to democratise access to knowledge that can alleviate suffering, empower individuals and enable people to face life's challenges with greater understanding, resilience and a positive outlook. It seeks to demonstrate how India's knowledge traditions can continue to contribute to contemporary education, wellbeing and human development, while remaining accessible and relevant to both younger and older generations.
